New research reveals that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
