Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
